Centre for Excellence: Creating the Conditions for Learning
As part of our work with the Centre for Excellence, we are strengthening the essential preconditions that allow high-quality teaching and learning to occur. One of our current priorities is establishing a calm, orderly and consistent start to every school day.
Evidence shows that predictable routines and calm learning environments help reduce students’ cognitive load, support emotional regulation and enable children to focus their attention on learning. Our aim is for students to develop into calm, quiet and focused learners from the beginning of the day who are ready to engage fully in their lessons.
To support this, the following arrangements apply before school:
- Students who arrive before 8.30am without a parent must go directly to the library, where they will be supervised and can read quietly.
- Students who arrive before 8.30am with a parent must remain with their parent until classroom doors open at 8.30am. If parents wish they can go the library and read quietly with their child/children, from 8.15am.
- Children are not to run around or play before school. This quieter start helps them transition calmly into the classroom and prepare for learning.
Teachers have spent the past two staff meetings developing a consistent, whole-school classroom entrance routine. When classroom doors open at 8.30am, students:
- enter the classroom quietly and are greeted by their teacher at the door;
- organise their belongings and materials for the day;
- complete a prescribed activity at their desk and
- are settled and ready to begin their first lesson when the siren sounds at 8.50am.
Consistency across classrooms is important. When routines are clear, familiar and reinforced throughout the school, students know what is expected and can direct more of their attention towards learning.
We are also prioritising the morning as the optimum learning time for literacy and numeracy instruction. Morning fitness will therefore no longer take place before lessons and has been moved to Friday afternoon. This ensures that students begin literacy and numeracy learning promptly, when they are fresh, settled and most ready to learn.
We appreciate the support of our families in helping us establish a calm and purposeful beginning to every school day. Together, we are creating the conditions in which every student can feel secure, remain focused and achieve their best.
Parent–Teacher Interviews
In response to parent feedback seeking more information about student achievement and progress between semester reports, we will hold parent–teacher interviews on Friday 23 October. The interviews will provide an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress towards the goals identified in their Semester 1 report and establish priorities for the remainder of the year.
There will be no school for students on this day; however, Big Childcare will be available for families requiring care. Parents will receive a Compass notification on Monday containing a link to the booking system. Interviews may be booked as either a face-to-face meeting or a telephone interview, depending on what is most convenient for your family.
Please note that interviews for Kindy 2A will be held on Wednesday 21 October, while interviews for Kindy 2B will be held on Wednesday 28 October.
Please be advised that school resumes in Term 4 on Tuesday 13 October. Monday 12 October is a School Development Day, and no students attend on this day. Big Childcare will be offering care on this day.
Kind regards
Kim Knowles
