Newsletter 8 May 2026

Good morning, everyone

What a fantastic way to start a Friday morning with Room 4 and Miss Moody’s wonderful assembly item. It was a great showcase of student learning and of our whole-school approach to the teaching of writing through the Talk for Writing program.

Talk for Writing supports students to develop confidence and success as writers by immersing them in rich language, helping them internalise text structures and vocabulary, and then guiding them to innovate and create their own high-quality writing. The program promotes consistency across the school and enables students to build strong speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in a highly engaging and collaborative way.

It was also fantastic to see such confident public speaking from our students. Opportunities like assemblies help students build communication skills, confidence and pride in their learning, while also strengthening our sense of school community.

I was immensely proud of our award winners this week and the way they demonstrated our CORE values in both their learning and interactions with others. Thank you to all students, staff and families for helping create such a positive and purposeful start to the day.

Congratulations to our award winners:

National Walk Safely to School Day & Thank a Traffic Warden Day 22 May 2026

Families and students are invited to join us for National Walk Safely to School Day on Friday 22 May 2026.

Students and families can meet at one of the following locations at 8:00am and walk to school together:

  • Kate Street Reserve
  • Duncan Street Reserve
  • Oats Street Station

This year, the day also coincides with Thank a Traffic Warden Day. We encourage our community to take the opportunity to thank Susan at the Mint Street crossing for the important role she plays in helping our students and families get to and from school safely each day.

Thank you to our P&C for providing coordinators at each meeting point and supporting this wonderful community event.

Our school is officially registered for the event, and students will be able to collect a tattoo when they arrive at school.

Save the Date – Saturday 30 May – School Community Planting Day

More information to follow from our wonderful P&C.

School Culture Survey – Community

So far, we have had 53 responses from parents which is a great start. Thank you sincerely to everyone who has responded. The survey closes on Friday 15 March so if you have not done so already, please complete the survey – your information and feedback is very important to us.

Finally, another reminder that Friday 29 May is a School Development Day for staff – no school for students on this day.

Have a great weekend

Kind regards

Kim Knowles

Please read on for our student councillor messages, delivered at assembly this morning:

Fatima: Good morning, everyone. I hope everyone had an amazing holiday and stayed safe. Thank you all for being such a respectful audience at the ANZAC Assembly and for coming to support and honour the people who died in war to protect our nation.

On another note, on Wednesday in Week 5, Dr Karl from Triple J will be having a video call with the Year 6 students, who will have the opportunity to ask him all of their interesting questions.

In Week 6, Friday 29 May is a Pupil Free Day, and the Cross Country Carnival will be held on Thursday 25 June in Week 10.

Austin: Good morning, everyone. Just a reminder to label all your jumpers this winter so you don’t lose them, as you will definitely need them for the colder weather ahead. Assuming the weather is similar to last year, you will probably also need a raincoat.

On Thursday 21 May, the Year 6 Student Leaders will be going to Kent Street Senior High School to meet with other primary schools and discuss ways we can improve our school. Together, we will create a plan for how we can achieve this. This is a full-day event, so you won’t see us at school that day.

Phoebe: School photo day is coming up in a month’s time on 2 and 3 June, in Week 7, so make sure you’re looking your best for your pictures. A note was sent home with a QR code and link for parents or guardians to order photos of their child online. Individual, sibling and class photos are all available for purchase, as well as choir and band photos.

Tyler: Good morning, everyone. I hope you’re all well, keeping warm and keeping an eye on those runaway jumpers. Remember to check lost property — I’ve already had to visit it a few times myself!

In Week 1, we had our first SRC meeting — Student Representative Council, for those who can’t remember. It was a very successful and fun meeting, where we welcomed our new team of representatives, including our Year 4 students joining us this year. It’s really exciting to see everyone working together and collaborating with one another, and I’m looking forward to what we can achieve together this year.

Just a friendly reminder — wink, wink — Sunday is Mother’s Day! Make sure those presents are ready. Thanks for listening and have a great day!

Premier’s Reading Challenge

We are now halfway through the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Students have until June 12 to log the books they have read.

Last week 201 books were read bringing us to a total of 965 books that have been read by 74 of our students. Keep on reading and don’t forget to log your books each week to be in the running for a weekly prizes.
