Newsletter 30 May 2025

Thank you to Room 3 for your fantastic effort in running our assembly during this very important week — National Reconciliation Week.

The whole school thoroughly enjoyed your Noongar version of Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes. You all performed brilliantly, and everyone who spoke did so clearly and confidently — well done!

After the assembly, the whole school gathered on the oval to reflect on the significance of the land on which we work and play, and its deep importance to the Wadjuk Noongar people. We stood barefoot on Country and observed a minute of silence to consider why reconciliation matters to us and to reflect on the learning that has taken place in classrooms throughout the week.

Following this moment of reflection, the whole school came together to sing Nidja Noongar Boodja Koort — performed with tapping sticks and increasing in speed each time. The song means our hearts are in the land and the land is in our hearts.

This special moment was beautifully led by Mrs Motherwell, along with Patrick, Cyprus, Tyler, Abigail, Theo, Milly and Johan.

National Reconciliation Week 2025: Now More Than Ever

This week, our school proudly acknowledges National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June), a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements — and to reflect on how we can contribute to reconciliation in Australia.

The 2025 theme, “Now More Than Ever”, reminds us that reconciliation is an ongoing journey that requires action from everyone. At school, students have been engaging in age-appropriate activities to deepen their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. Through storytelling, art, music, and respectful discussions, we are helping to build a future grounded in truth, respect, and unity.

We encourage families to talk about Reconciliation Week at home and explore ways to support meaningful change together.

Congratulations to this week’s award winners:

Keeping Everyone Safe – Why We Are a Nut Aware School

At our school, the safety and wellbeing of every student is our top priority. That’s why we are a nut aware school. This means we ask families to avoid sending nuts or nut-based products in lunchboxes, as even small traces can cause serious allergic reactions for some students.

Food allergies, especially to peanuts and tree nuts, can be life-threatening. Being nut aware helps us create a safer environment where all children can enjoy school without the risk of accidental exposure.

We thank our school community for supporting this important policy. By working together, we can help keep everyone safe, healthy, and included.

Important Notice – Parking

I respectfully ask that primary school parents do not use the staff car park under any circumstances. Please do not use the car park to pick up and drop off students and under no circumstances should our parents be parking in the staff car park. The staff car park is strictly for staff and as a pickup and set down point for our Education Support Centre parents and their children.

The availability of parking for our Education Support Centre families is critical for the wellbeing and safety of their children and I implore you to support the families of the centre by not using the staff car park.

I am acutely aware of the frustration that the lack of parking around the school causes, and the principal of the Education Support Centre and I continue to work together with the appropriate authorities to explore solutions. However, our number one focus is the safety of all students and their families.

Kind regards

Kim Knowles
Principal

Student Councillor Announcements

Please read on for the Student Councillor Announcements from this morning’s assembly:

Lance – Creative minds shape the world of books and writing. The Book Builders Challenge is a way to get people more involved with reading and writing, with celebrated authors coming in to help us create our own books. The Year 5s and 6s are learning how to challenge their brains and explode with ideas as we make our books. Kristy Nita Brown came into Rooms 9 and 10 for the whole day on Tuesday, where the Year 6s started planning their books. The Year 5s also had a session with Kristy on Wednesday, and it’s amazing how everyone was engaged and enthusiastic about our work.

Kavithma – Next week on Monday is WA Day, so it’s a school holiday for everyone. Please make sure no one arrives at school next Monday. Coming up next week, on the 3rd and 4th of June, we’ll have our school photos, so everyone, wear your very best and most appropriate clothing. For your school photos, don’t wear any faction T-shirts (except for sport captains). Only your school uniform is allowed, and Year 6s, please wear your school uniform and bring your leavers’ shirt in your bag.

Water Corp Incursion Coming Up

On Tuesday 10th June, students in Years 3 to 6 will take part in an exciting incursion called “Water in Aboriginal Culture”. In year group sessions, students will explore how Noongar people traditionally located and transported water and learn about Aboriginal knowledge-sharing practices. This incursion supports students in deepening their understanding of Aboriginal culture and sustainability. There is no cost to families for this incursion.

West Oz Wildlife Incursion

We recently hosted West Oz Wildlife for a very informative and hands on experience. Students were thrilled to meet Gummie and Nutella the koalas, Ginger and Ninja the pythons, Toothless the blue tongue lizard and Caesar the sugar glider!

The education program really motivated the students, they learnt a range of facts about each animal. The staff presented each animal separately, talking on each of the species of wildlife. Children were able to learn about the basic dietary requirements of each animal, where they live and why they look the way they do.

  • They discussed the particular habits and environmental needs of each species.
  • Investigated their habitat and discovered ways to protect them.
  • Endangered species
  • Special features to help survival in the wild
  • Offspring
  • Snake safety and much more.

The school received positive feedback from presenters about how well behaved students were, and that they are asked great questions!
