Dear Parents and Carers
Thank you to Room 9 and Room 10 for an amazing assembly. You have certainly set a strong standard for your year moving forward. As Principal, I was incredibly proud of the powerful messages and meaning you shared with us about our new factions.
The chants were fantastic — I cannot wait to hear them again at future sports carnivals!
These are the chants for each of the factions.
Kwila (Shark – blue)
Kwila! Kwila!
Sharp and Swift!
We are blue,
with a mighty gift!
Kaarda (Goanna – green)
We are Kaarda, fast and bold
We don’t do, what we’re told
Kaarda, Kaarda, steady and wise
Green Machine – Kaarda rise!
Waalitj (Wedge tailed eagle – yellow)
Waalitj! Waalitj!
High in the sky!
Strong and fearless — WAALITJ FLY!
Karrak (Red tailed cockatoo)
Karrak! Karrak!
Strong and proud — hear us cry!
Red and ready — KARRAK FLY!
Today we also announced our 2026 Student Leadership positions. I would like to acknowledge every student who nominated. Putting yourself forward for a leadership role takes courage. Year 3 and Year 5 students – NAPLAN Week 6 Term 1
In Week 6 of this term, our Year 3 and Year 5 students will participate in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy – NAPLAN.
All students in Years 3 and 5 in primary schools across Australia do NAPLAN tests in March each year. NAPLAN tests students’ skills in reading, writing and maths, with the test questions presented in Standard Australian English dialect.
Students read some of the questions and listen to others with headphones. The tests will get easier or harder, depending on how students are going on the test. There are four different tests:
– Writing
– Reading
– Conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation)
– Numeracy
Students in Year 3 will do the Writing test using pencil and paper and will answer the other test questions on the computer.
Students in Year 5 will answer all their test questions on computers.
Teachers will help students get ready for NAPLAN tests using practice tests.
NAPLAN shows how students are going all over Australia. People who work in the Australian Government, state and territory education authorities and schools use NAPLAN results. The results let them see which schools are doing well and which schools might need help and resources.
Later in the year, schools will get their students’ results and give parents/carers a report showing their child’s results. Parents/carers can talk to the class teacher about these results.
Further information will be sent home to families of Year 3 and Year 5 Students in the next few weeks.
For more information on NAPLAN, you can also visit nap.edu.au.
Cyber Safety Information Session for Parents & Carers
Protecting children in their digital worlds is an ever-evolving task for Australian families. Now more than ever, parents seek guidance in managing screen time and navigating the world of games and social media.
We are excited to support our parent community by hosting an important parent education session with ySafe, Australia’s leading provider of online safety education. The session will be held on the 5th March at 6pm In the school library.
Here is what you can expect from this session:
- Practical tips for online safety.
- Information on social media and gaming.
- Recommendations for screen time.
- Step-by-step guide for creating a cyber-safe home for children of all ages.
If you have found it challenging to get your kids off their devices and to bed, have concerns about the games they play, or worry that your child is spending excessive time online, this workshop is for you!
Please read on to hear the messages from our Student Councillors, shared in their own words at this morning’s assembly.
Austin:
Hello, my name is Austin and I am one of your new student councillors for 2026. Before I start, I would love to give Room 9 and Room 10 a round of applause for their wonderful assembly. I would also like to welcome every student, teacher, and parent back to the school. I am sure that this year will be the best year of school for everyone.
This fortnight at PBS we have been focusing on greeting each other positively. Raise your hand if you have greeted someone positively this morning.
When I have been walking around the school, I’ve been hearing all kinds of greetings. Some people were asking if others wanted to join the game they were playing. Other people were asking if the people sitting alone wanted to sit with them, and a lot more. Let’s keep up the amazing work.
Tyler:
Hello, my name is Tyler and I’m one of your student councillors for 2026. I hope everyone has had a great school holiday and is excited to be back.
So far, we’ve had a pretty busy first two weeks, with our student leader positions being voted on and selected in the last few days, such as our faction captains and more. Congratulations to those who were successful, and congratulations to all who nominated.
Our choirs and band have also started in the last week, as well as our specialist IMSS program. We look forward to seeing your progress over the year.
I’ve noticed the morale in the school is up, and I’m really glad it is, especially with the GREET OTHERS POSITIVELY ACROSS THE SCHOOL poster being placed around the school and in your classrooms. Well done, everyone.
I would also like to remind you about the welcome barbecue happening next Thursday. I hope you all have a wonderful evening and enjoy a great sausage sizzle.
Fatima:
Good morning, my name is Fatima and I’m one of your student councillors for 2026.
Last year, the SRC made a big decision to change the faction names. They also met with Shaun Tell Walsh to design the new faction shirts, which are being prepared for next year. Each faction name is now represented by an animal that is native to WA’s land and coastal waters in the Noongar language.
We are all looking forward to hearing you cheer the new chants at athletic carnivals and more. Before I end, I just want to say good luck and congratulations to all the specialist captains.
Phoebe:
Hello, my name is Phoebe and I am one of your student councillors for 2026.
This year, we are changing the SRC nomination process by just a little tweak. Year 3s still have one rep — yes, Miss Brown’s kids, you’re included! Year 4s and 5s have two reps, and Year 6s also have one rep.
If you are interested, the SRC nomination forms will be given out to each classroom from Years 3–6 after this assembly. The nomination forms are due back to your classroom teacher by next Friday, and the student councillors will interview you the week after.
Class teachers must narrow it down to three students for Years 3 and 6, while teachers for Years 4 and 5 can pick five recipients.
Thank you for listening to our reports.
