Dear Parents and Carers
Thank you to Ms Adams, Ms Kalphas and Ms Tassone and the students of Room 1 for their amazing assembly presentation assembly this morning.
Room 1 were definitely on theme, sharing with us a poem by Ada Clarke called ‘Halloween Fun’. This was followed by an action-packed song called ‘What will you be for Halloween?’ Not only did the students dance along, they also wore felt masks they had made, along with some very colourful artwork as a backdrop. Congratulations to everyone – you have really set the scene for tonight’s Halloween Disco!

World Teachers’ Day- 30 October 2026
Today, we celebrate World Teachers’ Day. This is an opportunity to acknowledge not only our incredible teaching staff, but all East Victoria Park Primary School staff for the amazing work they do each and every day to support our students.
Our teachers, education assistants, administration staff, cleaners, gardeners and support staff all play an important role in creating a safe, welcoming and engaging environment where children can learn, grow and thrive.
Thank you to all our amazing staff for the positive impact they have on the lives of our students and families.

Centre for Excellence -Building Strong Readers Through Oral Reading Fluency
As part of our ongoing work with the Centre for Excellence, we are continuing to strengthen our evidence-based teaching practices to ensure every student develops the essential skills needed to become a confident and successful learner.
One of our current areas of focus is oral reading fluency – an important component of learning to read.
What is oral reading fluency and why is it important?
Oral reading fluency is the ability to read text aloud accurately, smoothly and with appropriate expression. Fluent readers recognise words automatically, allowing them to focus their attention on understanding what they are reading rather than using all their effort to work out individual words.
Research tells us that reading fluency is an important bridge between learning to decode words and developing strong reading comprehension. When students read fluently, they are better able to understand, remember and engage with what they read. This is essential for success not only in English, but across all learning areas.
What are we doing at East Victoria Park Primary School?
As part of our commitment to consistent, high-impact teaching practices, we are trialling a structured oral reading fluency routine across Years 1 to 6, during term 4.
This routine will provide students with regular opportunities to practise reading aloud, develop accuracy and expression, and build confidence through repeated reading and structured peer and teacher feedback.
By establishing a consistent approach across classrooms, we aim to strengthen students’ reading skills and ensure they have the foundations needed to become increasingly independent and capable readers.
This work builds on our existing whole-school approaches to literacy and reflects our commitment to providing high-quality, evidence-informed teaching that makes a positive difference to student learning outcomes.
How can families help?
Reading at home continues to play an important role in developing confident readers. Listening to your child read, reading aloud together, modelling fluent reading and talking about books are all valuable ways to support their progress.
We look forward to sharing more about this initiative as we trial and refine our approach.
Our goal is simple: every child becoming a confident, fluent reader who can read to learn, enjoy reading and experience success across the curriculum.
Class Placements for 2027
Planning for 2027 is well underway.
As outlined in previous newsletters, some of our classes each year are composite classes, where two year levels are combined in one classroom. Because our funding is based on total student numbers rather than year levels, composite classes are an important and necessary part of our structure.
At East Victoria Park Primary School, we form all classes—composite or single-year—with great care to ensure a balanced mix of abilities, friendships, and learning needs. There is no academic advantage or disadvantage to being in a composite class; students continue to learn the curriculum for their specific year level, and teachers work collaboratively across year levels to plan and deliver programs.
Where possible, we aim to avoid placing students in a composite class two years in a row. If your child is placed in a composite class for 2027, please view it as a positive opportunity for growth and learning. We appreciate your support and encouragement in helping your child embrace their new class with confidence.
Providing Input for 2027 Placements
If you have any information you would like us to consider when making class placements for 2027, please email the school on eastvictoriapark.ps@education.wa.edu.au by Friday, 6 November 2026, using the subject line “Class Placement 2027.”
We will take into account academic, social, and emotional factors when considering placement requests. While every request will be carefully reviewed, please note that it may not always be possible to accommodate all preferences.
Requests received after the closing date will not be considered.
If your child will not be returning to East Victoria Park Primary School in 2027, please email us at eastvictoriapark.ps@education.wa.edu.au using the subject line ‘Not returning in 2027’.
Please see the Class Placement Policy on the school website for further details.

Our Year 5 students in Mr Young’s class have been working with local children’s author Kristy Nita Brown on In These Streets, a professionally published anthology celebrating the people, places and stories of East Victoria Park!
Thanks to funding from the WA State Government’s Creative Learning Residency program, students have explored local street art, discovered our community’s history and participated in creative workshops with Aboriginal artists.
They are now busy writing, illustrating and editing their very own contributions to a REAL book!

Year 6 Day Camp – From the Ocean to the Oval
Year 6s went to the Maritime Museum in Fremantle and Optus stadium in Burswood for their final day camp.
At the Maritime Museum we learnt all about how the Great Barrier Reef and other underwater ecosystems survive and thrive. We watched a remarkable virtual reality experience where we saw an amazing documentary in full 360-degree immersion.
The Optus stadium tour was almost even more interesting. We got to explore every nook and cranny of the stadium from the Eagles and Dockers changerooms to the special Media Rooms and stands where the crowd sits. We were also able to see a beautiful view of the Matagarup Bridge and Swan River from the Skyview Terrace, which was amazing. Overall, we had an exceptional time and enjoyed exploring the sea and the stadium. Thank you to all the teachers for organising our day camps this year!
