Dear Parents and Carers
Room 2 Assembly – InitiaLit in Action
A big congratulations to Room 2 and Mrs Gerstorfer for their wonderful assembly this morning! The students impressed us all with their confident and engaging presentation about vowels, verbs, nouns and the “bossy e.” It was clear how much effort they had put in, and we are very proud of the way they shared their learning.
Their performance was also a fantastic showcase of the InitiaLit program, our structured phonics approach taught across Kindergarten to Year 2. InitiaLit helps children develop strong foundations in reading and writing by teaching the building blocks of literacy in a fun, explicit and systematic way.
Today’s assembly was a great example of how this program is supporting our youngest learners – and how much they are enjoying the journey!

Relief Teachers at EVPPS
Relief teachers are an important part of our school community. They step in to care for and teach our students when staff are unwell, on leave, or attending professional learning. All our relief teachers are fully qualified and hold current Teacher Registration Board accreditation.
As they are not part of our permanent staff, relief teachers may not always be familiar with all the specific routines and practices we use here at EVPPS. Even so, they do their best to keep things running smoothly and to make sure learning continues for our students.
We always welcome your feedback – whether it’s positive or a concern. If you would like to share your thoughts, please get in touch with our Deputy Principals:
- Kindergarten – Year 2: Louise Gray
- Years 3 – 6: Janette Tuttle
Thank you for your understanding and support as we work together to provide the very best for our children.
Reminder: Open Board Meeting
Are you interested in being a Board Member in the future – we will have several vacancies coming up in 2026.
Our Open Board meeting for this year is being held on Monday 15 September at 5. 30 – 7.00pm in the school library. The agenda includes:
- Homework Policy review
- 2025 NAPLAN presentation
- Finalise Class Placement Policy
- Traffic Action Groups update
Play First, Eat Second – Update
Thank you for your feedback on our new recess and lunch routine for Years 1–6, where students play first and eat second. Pre-Primary and Kindy already follow this approach, and we’ve now been trialling it across the school for two weeks.
There’s been a short adjustment period, but students are becoming more organised. To support them further, Year 3–6 students will now leave lunchboxes in eating areas before play, and some students have suggested packing a little extra for crunch and sip to avoid being too hungry before recess.
We’re making this change because research shows children benefit when they play first and eat afterwards:
- Eat more calmly and waste less food
- Return to class focused and ready to learn
- Enjoy positive social time while eating
- Are more active during play
We’ll continue to monitor how it’s going and welcome feedback from students, staff, and families as we work together to support healthy habits and learning success.
We have many events coming up, including the Faction Carnival next Thursday (with jumps and throws on Tuesday for selected Year 3- 6 students) – our favourite day of the year. I hope to see you on Thursday.
Have a great weekend – enjoy the sunshine and fine weather.
Kind regards

Student Voice – What’s happening around our school
Kavithma: Last week was very busy with all of us having Science Week and Book Week, but we also had our Taiko drumming incursion last Thursday with the Years 1 to 6 participating. Everyone had a chance to join in, including the teachers, and we hope that all of us had a very fun and exciting experience. Thank you to Mrs Motherwell for hosting this incursion.
Mujtuba: On Tuesday this week, the Senior Choir had a fantastic time at Churchlands Senior High School, practising and singing to get ready for the amazing and well-known Massed Choir Festival. As a chance to warm up our voices for the festival, everyone in choir had a great time! Choir parents don’t forget to buy your tickets.
Johan: Next week, we have two of our biggest carnivals of the year. The Jumps and Throws Carnival will be held on the 2nd of September for selected Year 3–6 students and a few Year 2s. The Faction Carnival will be held on the 4th of September for all students, with a sausage sizzle and bake sale. Sausage sizzle orders should be made online with the link, and all orders must be completed by Monday, the 1st of September. Students will need to bring their own money to buy items from the bake sale on the day of the Faction Carnival.
Lance: Last Friday, we had an amazing time dressing up for the Science and Book Week parade. As a chance to showcase costumes and ideas, we saw many different science-themed clothing and designs. Thank you to everyone for dressing up so creatively, to the parents for taking time to buy and create costumes, and to Mrs Walters for organising the event.
