Reporting to Parents – Semester 2

As part of a range of measures to reduce red tape and administrative burden for teachers and school leaders, the Department has clarified the following information for end of semester reports in relation to the minimum assessment and reporting on student achievement requirements, outlined in the School Curriculum and Standards Authority’s (the Authority) Pre-primary to Year 10: Teaching, Assessing and Reporting Policy. It has been confirmed that for end of semester reports:

  • there is no requirement for individual learning area comments
  • there is no requirement to report grades at the strand/sub-strand level
  • an overall comment must be provided, the nature of which is determined at the school
  • parents can request information regarding a student’s achievement relative to the performance of the student’s peer group.

At East Victoria Park, from this semester we will no longer be providing learning area comments, however, we will report at the strand/sub-strand level. Policy requires only that an overall grade be given for each learning area, however we will continue to give grades at the strand level. For example, this means that students will receive a grade for Speaking and Listening, Reading and Viewing and Writing in addition to an overall grade for English.

Since Term 3 this year your child’s teachers have sent out learning plan outlines for each term. This information gives you an outline of what is being taught in each learning area, across the term. Having the Term 3 and Term 4 outline in front of you when you read your child’s end of semester report will assist you to see the learning they have achieved, against the grades that they have been allocated.

Grades

Your child’s grades are described as:

AExcellentThe student demonstrates excellent achievement of what is expected for this year level.
BHighThe student demonstrates high achievement of what is expected for this year level.
CSatisfactoryThe student demonstrates satisfactory achievement of what is expected for this year level.
DLimitedThe student demonstrates limited achievement of what is expected for this year level.
EVery LowThe student demonstrates very low achievement of what is expected for this year level.

If you would like further information about how your child is progressing, we urge you to make an appointment to see your child’s teacher. Teachers are always happy to meet with you to discuss your child’s progress.

This information has been shared with the School Board and the P&C, prior to this being shared with the school community.

I urge you to reach out to your child’s teacher at any time to see how they are progressing.

Your Move Active Travel Festival – Thursday 10 October

What a great day for the school. We would like to pass on a huge thanks to the P&C for organising the Ride to school day event, including providing us with an awesome breakfast. As you can see in the photos, we had a lot of fun dressing up our bikes and scooters. Our local member of parliament, Hannah Beazley MLA, donated a $350 bike voucher which was won by a very happy Hamish, from Room 11.

The breakfast was followed by the Your Move Active Travel Festival that included activities such as skateboarding clinics, bike education, Constable Care shows and even a Transperth bus! Students learnt how to respect the rights of other people on the bus, such as don’t scream or run on the bus. Students also learnt about tagging on and off the bus.

Composite Classes

At East Victoria Park Primary School, we compile our classes in such a way that there is a range of abilities in all classes. There is no benefit, or disadvantage, to students in a single year level class as opposed to a composite class (a class with two year levels). We are funded on a per student basis, not per year level, therefore our decision to have composite classes for some year levels is based on numbers in any given year level. Teachers plan collaboratively in year level groups and students in composite classes are delivered their year level curriculum. Generally, as a rule, we try not to put students in a composite class for two years in a row.

2025 Class Placements

We are beginning to plan class placements for 2024. If you have any information that you would like us to consider when making class placements for next year, please email me at kim.knowles@education.wa.edu.au by Friday 8 November, 2024. Please put “Class Placement 2025” in the subject line.

If you are leaving the school and not returning in 2025, please inform the school via the link below:

OSHC Expression of Interest

As part of good governance, we are required to run an expression of interest for selecting an OSHC (Out of School Hours Care) provider for 2025. I would like to extend a special thank you to P&C member Eleasha Shadbolt, who represented the parent community on the selection panel. Eleasha generously devoted her personal time to this important task, and we are grateful for her input. The selection of our provider from 2025 onwards has been based on best value for families.

I am pleased to advise that our provider from 2025 will be Big Childcare. They will provide a similar service to the current one but will also be providing care on School Development Days and will be looking at introducing a Holiday Care program, next year, if there is a demand for it.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Junior Adventures Group and their staff, who have provided a wonderful service to our families over many years. We thank them for the care that they have provided to our families and the school community.

School Development Day

Finally, a reminder that Friday 8 November is a School Development Day and there is no school for students on that day.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Jess: “Hello everyone! Who’s excited for Halloween? I know I am! While Halloween may be next Thursday, we’re kicking off the fun early with a Spooktacular Disco tonight! Everyone who has a ticket will be showing off their spooky outfits and dancing the night away. Plus, there’ll be pizza, party games, prizes, and more! Hope you all have an amazing time, and I can’t wait to see you there!”

Mira: “Good morning, everyone! As you know, our school has officially started swimming lessons. This past week has been quite eventful, with students who’ve signed up for swimming heading by bus to Aqua Life, the nearest swim school. They’re receiving lessons tailored to their skill level. I hope you’re all having an amazing time in the water!”
