At East Victoria Park PS, we strive to foster a sustainable ethos that encourages students to care and respect the environment and their own wellbeing. Through a coordinated and cross-curricular approach, students are provided with a diverse range of sustainable learning experiences and initiatives. Active involvement enables students to adopt a strong sense of ownership of sustainable practices within the school community while empowering them to look beyond EVPPS towards global contexts.
The students, staff and wider community of EVPPS have implemented specific processes throughout the school to ensure sustainable patterns of living are established. The strategies of reduce, reuse, recycle are incorporated into the curriculum and everyday activities at school.
Waste Wise Warriors
Waste minimisation and correct waste disposal occur at both a classroom and whole-school level. Waste-Wise Warriors collect and measure fruit and vegetable scraps during break times. These food scraps are then recycled via composting or worm farms.
Whole School Sustainability Events
Every year, students participate in numerous whole-school events to raise awareness about environmental issues while promoting positive, sustainable change. Involvement in Clean Up Australia Day inspired students to collect all litter found on our school grounds and practice care.
Junior Garden
The Junior Garden promotes nature literacy through fun and engaging learning experiences that spark the imagination of students while encouraging healthy and sustainable lifestyles. ‘Busy Bee’ events are held throughout the school year to allow all members of the school community to be involved.
Clean Up Australia Day
Every year, students participate in numerous whole-school events to raise awareness about environmental issues while promoting positive, sustainable change. Involvement in Clean Up Australia Day inspired students to collect all litter found on our school grounds and practice care.
ECO Arts Festival
The ECO Arts Festival, held in conjunction with the Town of Victoria Park Arts Season, promoted sustainability through the arts. All students contributed by making a ‘Junk Bug’ out of recyclable materials provided by REmida. At the festival, various stalls were set up to engage the community in sustainable practices such as a garden stall and recycle right station. Several sustainability groups also conducted workshops, including Ciquest Circus, Precious Plastic, Roving Recycler and Junkadelic Brass Band.
Plastic Free July
Plastic Free July was an initiative students engaged with to reduce the amount of single-use plastic used during the month of July.
Waste – wise accredited school
Every year, we continue to successfully meet the requirements to remain an Accredited Waste Wise School. This certificate recognises the excellent efforts we’ve undertaken as a school to reduce waste and develop environmental values and long-term behaviour change in our community.
Community Partnerships
Our ‘Recycle Right Station’ allows members of the school community to donate materials that cannot be recycled using general disposal systems. Partnerships have been established with specialised organisations who repurpose collected items into new materials that are of benefit to society. These organisations includeGreenbatch, Lions Club Spectacles, Bread Tags and Battery World. Partnership with local East Victoria Park Bunnings has enabled multiple gardening workshops in the Junior Garden.
